About Clarens Quilt Festival

Winter in the Free State means Clarens Quilt Festival. The annual festival has grown from childhood to adulthood. It is the only annual quilt festival in the Free State and has grown over the last ten years from 7 to 330 participants.

The festival has a unique relaxing character due to the locality and the personal touch to everything. This year there will be 8 classes every day. The classes are small and students get lots of personal attention. It is the ideal get away for the beginner quilter and those that want to quilt in a relaxed environment. Eight demonstrations will be presented on 28 June 2023.

The festival feeds all the senses: We listen to new ideas; We view quilts; The environment feeds the soul and we can touch lots of new fabrics and gadgets!

Where it all started

The Clarens Quilt Festival was born in 2006 when 7 ladies together with teacher Rove Mittermaier and organiser Aae Randlehoff desperatley need a quilting break.

The need for such a festival in a very beautiful area was clear from the very beginning. In 2015 the ladies enroll for more than 250 courses with 30 differet projects.

This is a rural retreat and most classes are limited to 20 students.

It is mid winter in Clarens but the hall is nice and warm and the home made soup for lunch and the sherry for the cold is good medicine.

Various retailed will be selling fabrics, wool and haberdashery.
